Languages Mission Statement

In our Kingfisher Partnership, we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. Learning another language gives our children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to look beyond their rural parameters to understand both their own cultures and those of others. In a rapidly changing world, learning a language prepares and equips our pupils with the skills needed to participate in the international workplace.

Implementation

Curriculum

EYFS / Key Stage 1

A variety of languages are introduced informally in EYFS and Key Stage 1.  A new language is introduced monthly using a set of provided posters. Children will be taught basic greetings to use at the start and end of the school day.

Lower Key Stage 2

Lower Key Stage 2 will have a rolling two-year language program. In the first year of the rolling program, children will learn a new language each term; British Sign Language, Mandarin and Latin. In the second year of the rolling program, children will concentrate on learning one language from the following; Italian, Spanish or German.  The choice of which will be left to the teacher depending on their own prior experience.

Upper Key Stage 2

The National Curriculum 2014 requires that children have the opportunity to learn a language in depth.  French will be taught in Year 5 and 6 in order for pupils to make substantial progress in one language.

In Key Stage 2 Languages will be taught for one hour per week for half of the term. A clear scheme of work based on published schemes such as Rigolo and Minimus is followed by all teachers to ensure pupils’ language development and progression.
